Privilege escalation via unsanitized uploaded SVG scripts
Published Jan 27, 2024 · Updated May 29, 2025
Stored XSS in Sunlight CMS 8.0.1 allows remote authenticated users to escalate privileges through an SVG uploaded in File Manager. File Manager accepts an SVG containing JavaScript and serves it without removing active script, so opening the image executes attacker code in an administrator's browser. An account permitted to upload files and an Administrator or Super Administrator who opens the image are required; the demonstrated code promotes the uploader to Super Administrator.
