CVE-2023-47640Network attack vector

Privilege escalation via brute-forced session signing key

Published Nov 14, 2023 · Updated Jan 7, 2025

Cryptographic weakness in DataHub Frontend before 0.11.1 allows remote authenticated users to escalate privileges via a forged session cookie. The Play LegacyCookiesModule signs sessions with HMAC-SHA1 using a short Helm-generated frontend secret that can be brute-forced. An attacker needs a valid or stolen session cookie and substantial compute, after which a forged privileged cookie grants elevated access.
