Local privilege escalation via msimg32.dll search hijack
Published Nov 30, 2023 · Updated Aug 2, 2024
Untrusted DLL search in Notepad++ 6.5 allows local users to execute code with elevated privileges through msimg32.dll. The application resolves msimg32.dll through a search path containing the current working directory instead of using a fully qualified trusted path, allowing an attacker-controlled copy to load. Exploitation requires local access to place the named DLL in that directory and launch Notepad++; the injected code inherits the application's privileges.
