Unauthorized Wi-Fi access via predictable default PSK
Published Jan 22, 2024 · Updated May 30, 2025
Default credential weakness in Technicolor TC8715D devices allows physically proximate attackers to derive the WPA2 password from Wi-Fi identifiers. The factory PSK concatenates the first six characters of the SSID with the last six characters of the BSSID, both exposed in beacon frames. A nearby attacker can join a device that still uses this default password, gaining the network access and device reachability granted to Wi-Fi clients.
