Gatekeeper bypass via missing root quarantine metadata
Published Apr 29, 2024 · Updated Mar 28, 2025
Improper quarantine handling in MacPaw The Unarchiver before 4.3.6 allows attackers to bypass Gatekeeper via a crafted archive. XADUnarchiver and XADSimpleUnarchiver create an archive's root directory without invoking the delegate path that copies quarantine metadata to the new directory. After a user downloads, extracts, and opens the archive on macOS, an unsigned application bundle can run without Gatekeeper's normal warning.
