CVE-2023-45669Network attack vector

Cloned authenticator evasion via discarded counter updates

Published Oct 16, 2023 · Updated Sep 13, 2024

Improper authentication in WebAuthn4J Spring Security before 0.9.1.RELEASE allows attackers with a cloned authenticator to evade detection. WebAuthnAuthenticationProvider.doAuthenticate passes a new AuthenticatorImpl to verification, so the returned counter update never reaches the persisted WebAuthnAuthenticator object. Exploitation requires possession of a cloned valid authenticator; authentication can then proceed without the relying party detecting counter reuse.
