CVE-2023-4422Network attack vector

Stored XSS via unsafe asset upload

Published Aug 18, 2023 · Updated Oct 3, 2024

Stored cross-site scripting in Cockpit CMS before 2.6.3 allows remote authenticated users to execute script in another user's browser via uploaded content. The asset-upload handler previously trusted filename extensions and did not validate MIME types, allowing HTML files to be stored and rendered as active content. Exploitation requires an authenticated user who can upload an asset and a victim to open the rendered asset or affected page; the impact is browser-session data exposure or actions performed in the victim's context.
