CVE-2023-4387

Kernel crash or disclosure via vmxnet3 double-free

Published Aug 16, 2023 · Updated Nov 6, 2025

Use-after-free in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 and 9 allows local users to crash the kernel or disclose kernel memory through vmxnet3. In vmxnet3_rq_alloc_rx_buf, failed DMA mappings free an skb or page without clearing its pointer, so vmxnet3_rq_cleanup_all frees it again. Reachability requires local access, an active vmxnet3 device, and a receive-buffer DMA mapping failure during device activation.
