Local root command execution via writable cron files
Published Aug 16, 2023 · Updated Aug 2, 2024
Privilege escalation in MicroWorld eScan Anti-Virus 7.0.32 allows local users to execute commands as root through the runasroot helper. The SUID helper accepts chmod for whitelisted cron files because an OR condition treats valid arguments as sufficient, regardless of the caller UID. A low-privileged local account can make an eScan cron file writable, replace its contents, restore its mode, and wait for cron to execute it as root.
