Arbitrary code execution via MPEG-2 decoder overwrite
Published Dec 12, 2023 · Updated Nov 4, 2025
Out-of-bounds write in AppleVA in Apple macOS before 14.2 allows local users to execute arbitrary code through image processing. AppleVADriver decodes malformed MPEG-2 video data and writes past a buffer boundary during hardware-accelerated processing. Execution requires a user or application to process attacker-supplied media, and the public artifact demonstrates a crash rather than a complete code-execution chain.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
