Remote code execution via unchecked RPC value type
Published Sep 20, 2023 · Updated Aug 2, 2024
Type confusion in Netatalk afpd 3.1.0 through 3.1.16 allows remote attackers to execute code through crafted Spotlight RPC packets. Callers of dalloc_value_for_key() fail to verify the returned dictionary value's type before treating attacker-controlled data as a pointer. The afpd Spotlight feature must be enabled, and it is disabled by default; exploitation can interrupt the service, while code execution remains theoretical.
