CVE-2023-42456

Local file deletion via username path traversal

Published Sep 21, 2023 · Updated Jun 10, 2026

Relative path traversal in sudo-rs before 0.2.1 allows local users to delete files via a crafted username and sudo -K. SessionRecordFile builds a timestamp path under /var/run/sudo-rs/ts from the unvalidated username, so dot and slash sequences escape that directory before the resolved file is cleared. Exploitation requires login as a specially named account and ordinarily the ability to create that account; the resulting deletion can damage system integrity or interrupt services.
