CVE-2023-42452Network attack vector

Stored XSS via unsanitized translated content

Published Sep 19, 2023 · Updated Sep 24, 2024

Stored XSS in Mastodon before 4.0.10, 4.1.8, and 4.2.0-rc2 allows remote attackers to execute unescaped HTML through translation. TranslateStatusService converted translator-supplied status content to HTML without applying the MASTODON_STRICT sanitizer. A victim must click Translate on a malicious post, and the browser's Content Security Policy limits impact unless an attacker also bypasses it.
