Remote code execution via unchecked SMS copy
Published Apr 17, 2024 · Updated Nov 4, 2025
Stack-based buffer overflow in oFono before 2.1 on Fedora Linux allows remote attackers to execute code via a crafted SMS PDU. decode_status_report() derives a byte count from untrusted user-data fields, then copies that many PDU bytes into a fixed-size stack field without checking its capacity. Delivery requires a crafted SMS through a malicious base station or compromised modem; successful exploitation runs code in the oFono process.
