CVE-2023-42143Network attack vector

Backdoor installation via unchecked firmware update

Published Jan 23, 2024 · Updated May 30, 2025

Missing firmware integrity validation in Shelly TRV 2.1.8 allows remote authenticated users to install a backdoored firmware image. The firmware updater accepts and installs a manipulated image fetched after the device is redirected to an attacker-controlled host, without verifying the image's integrity. Exploitation requires low-privilege access and user interaction; successful installation gives the attacker persistent control through modified device firmware.
