Stored script execution via inline SVG downloads
Published Sep 8, 2023 · Updated Sep 26, 2024
Cross-site scripting in Matrix Media Repo before 1.3.0 allows remote authenticated users to execute JavaScript through downloaded SVG media. The download router treats every image MIME type as safe for inline display, so an uploaded scripted SVG is returned with Content-Disposition set to inline. Exploitation requires another user to follow a direct download link, and deployments that do not share the repository domain with other services are not affected.
