Root code execution via SetUsersSettings stack overflow
Published May 3, 2024 · Updated Aug 2, 2024
A stack-based buffer overflow in D-Link DIR-3040 firmware 120B03 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to execute code as root. The SetUsersSettings handler in prog.cgi copies an HNAP request string into a fixed-size stack buffer without adequate length validation. Exploitation requires authenticated access from an adjacent network to the router's HTTP or HTTPS service; successful control flow runs with root privileges.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
