Root code execution via SetTriggerPPPoEValidate stack overflow
Published May 3, 2024 · Updated Aug 2, 2024
Stack-based buffer overflow in D-Link DIR-3040 1.20B03 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to execute code as root. The SetTriggerPPPoEValidate handler in prog.cgi copies an unvalidated HNAP string into a fixed-size stack buffer, causing memory corruption. Exploitation requires access to the router's adjacent network and administrative authentication; success grants root control of the appliance.
