Root code execution via unchecked PSK copy
Published May 3, 2024 · Updated Aug 2, 2024
Stack-based buffer overflow in D-Link DIR-3040 firmware 1.20B03 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to execute root code. The SetQuickVPNSettings handler in prog.cgi copies an unvalidated, user-controlled PSK string into a fixed-size stack buffer while processing HNAP requests. Access from the adjacent network and administrative authentication are required; successful exploitation runs attacker-controlled code with root privileges.
