Root code execution via password buffer overflow
Published May 3, 2024 · Updated Aug 2, 2024
Stack-based buffer overflow in D-Link DIR-3040 1.20B03 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to execute code via HNAP requests. The SetQuickVPNSettings handler in prog.cgi copies a user-supplied Password value into a fixed-length stack buffer without validating its length. A valid session and access to the router's LAN-side HTTP or HTTPS service are required; successful exploitation runs code as root.
