Privilege escalation via SECURITY DEFINER search path hijacking
Published Dec 12, 2023 · Updated May 27, 2025
Privilege escalation in EnterpriseDB Postgres Advanced Server allows remote authenticated users to execute SQL with a function definer's privileges. Affected packages, procedures, and functions run with SECURITY DEFINER while resolving unqualified object names through an attacker-controlled search_path. A database user able to create an earlier-resolved object can hijack a privileged call and exercise the definer's database permissions.
