CVE-2023-40998Public exploitNetwork attack vector

Service crash via negative packet-size allocation

Published Aug 28, 2023 · Updated Aug 2, 2024

Buffer overflow in O-RAN Software Community RMR 4.9.0 allows remote attackers to crash an RMR service via a malformed packet-size field. The receive path decodes the first four packet bytes as a signed negative size and uses that value during subsequent memory allocation, triggering a core dump. An attacker must be able to send RMR traffic to the service; exploitation interrupts that RMR process and its dependent communications.
