Account takeover via MFA code redirection
Published Aug 11, 2023 · Updated Oct 10, 2024
Improper authentication in EmpowerID before 7.205.0.1 allows remote authenticated users to bypass MFA and access a victim account. The account-email change flow accepts the username and password without verifying previously registered MFA, then sends codes to the replacement address. The attacker must know valid first-factor credentials and control the replacement mailbox; successful use grants access as the victim.
