Local privilege escalation via legacy shortcut URI grant
Published Dec 4, 2023 · Updated Aug 2, 2024
Improper input validation in Android 11, 12, 12L, and 13 allows local users to elevate privileges through a legacy shortcut. PackageManagerHelper.hasPermissionForActivity accepts a chooser intent in a legacy home-screen shortcut and permits its URI grant instead of rejecting that unsupported share flow. Exploitation requires user interaction with the shortcut and lets a low-privilege application bypass URI permission enforcement.
