CVE-2023-39910Known exploitationNetwork attack vector

Wallet theft via 32-bit Mersenne Twister seeds

Published Aug 9, 2023 · Updated Oct 10, 2024

Weak entropy generation in Libbitcoin Explorer 3.0.0 through 3.6.0 allows remote attackers to recover wallet private keys and steal funds. The bx seed path passes its requested output to pseudo_random_fill, whose MT19937 generator is initialized from only 32 bits of system-clock data. Only wallets whose key material was created from bx seed output are exposed, but recovery can occur remotely from public blockchain data.
