CVE-2023-39810Public exploit

Arbitrary file write via traversal archive paths

Published Aug 28, 2023 · Updated Jul 9, 2026

Path traversal in BusyBox cpio 1.33.2 allows local users to write files outside the extraction directory via a crafted archive. The extraction path accepts relative member names containing ../ and writes their contents without confining the resolved destination to the working directory. Exploitation requires extraction of an untrusted archive and grants writes wherever the cpio process has filesystem permission.
