Filesystem path escape via uncontained symlink extraction
Published Aug 30, 2023 · Updated Oct 2, 2024
Path traversal in ZIPFoundation 0.9.17 and earlier allows attackers to escape the extraction directory through a crafted ZIP archive. The symlink extraction branch passes an archive entry's link target directly to FileManager.createSymbolicLink without checking whether it remains within the destination directory. A victim must extract the crafted archive; the resulting link redirects filesystem access outside the intended destination under the host process's permissions.
