Authenticated command execution via unfiltered extra variables
Published Aug 28, 2023 · Updated Oct 2, 2024
Code injection in Ansible Semaphore 2.8.90 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to execute commands through crafted extra variables. Ansible Semaphore passes user-controlled extra-variable values unfiltered to ansible-playbook, whose lookup plugins evaluate pipe expressions as commands. Low-privileged project access to the environment interface is sufficient, permitting file access, outbound requests, and commands under the Semaphore service account.
