CVE-2023-3896Public exploit

Editor crash via zero-width scroll calculation

Published Aug 7, 2023 · Updated Feb 13, 2025

Divide-by-zero in Vim 9.0.1367-1 through 9.0.1367-3 allows local users to crash the editor through a crafted command script. The scroll_cursor_bot function divides by width2 after a narrow split, line-number column, fold column, and smooth scrolling reduce that calculated width to zero. Exploitation requires a user to run attacker-controlled Vim commands; the demonstrated consequence is a SIGFPE crash of the editor process.
