CVE-2023-38924Public exploitNetwork attack vector

Authenticated router crash via undersized password buffer

Published Aug 7, 2023 · Updated Oct 11, 2024

Buffer overflow in NETGEAR DGN3500 firmware 1.1.00.37 allows remote authenticated users to crash the router through setup.cgi. setup.cgi accepts an http_password value of up to 0x80 bytes in NVRAM, but /usr/sbin/rc's create_smb_cfg function copies it into a smaller stack buffer. Administrative access is required to set the value, and an oversized password overflows the buffer and interrupts service.
