Application crash via truncated STYLE record
Published Aug 15, 2023 · Updated Oct 8, 2024
Heap buffer over-read in libxls 1.6.2 allows remote attackers to crash applications that parse a crafted XLS file. When xls_parseWorkBook handles a truncated STYLE record, it passes get_string a declared length larger than the actual buffer, causing an out-of-bounds heap read while decoding the style name. Exploitation requires an application or user to open attacker-supplied workbook content; the demonstrated consequence is a parser crash, while arbitrary code execution is not substantiated by the published trace.
