A reachable assertion in Avahi 0.8 and earlier allows local users to interrupt the avahi-daemon service via crafted service-publishing records. The avahi_dns_packet_append_record function mishandles oversized record data and hits an assertion while constructing a DNS packet, aborting the daemon. Exploitation requires local unprivileged access to service publishing unless user-service publishing is explicitly disabled; the consequence is a service interruption without confidentiality or integrity impact.
