Crash or disclosure via oversized SMB context name
Published Jul 17, 2023 · Updated Aug 2, 2024
Out-of-bounds read in ksmbd in the Linux kernel before 6.3.4 allows remote attackers to crash systems or disclose kernel memory. The smb2_find_context_vals function passes an attacker-controlled SMB2 CREATE context name_len to memcmp against a fixed tag without first requiring equal lengths. The flaw is reachable only when the ksmbd SMB server is enabled; Ubuntu notes that ksmbd-tools, which is not installed by default, is needed to enable the service.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.

Attacks
What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
