CVE-2023-38037

Local plaintext disclosure via permissive temporary files

Published Jan 9, 2025 · Updated Feb 15, 2025

Information disclosure in Rails Active Support 5.2.0 through 6.1.7.4 and 7.0.0 through 7.0.7 allows local users to read plaintext. ActiveSupport::EncryptedFile#writing places decrypted contents in a predictable system-temporary path using binwrite, so the file inherits permissions from the process umask instead of enforcing mode 0600. Exploitation requires local filesystem access during an encrypted-file edit and exposes only the temporary plaintext present during that window.
