Local privilege escalation via MSI repair breakout
Published Jul 25, 2023 · Updated Oct 3, 2024
Improper privilege management in Cryptomator before 1.9.2 allows local users to gain SYSTEM privileges via MSI repair. The MSI repair function spawns administrative command shells that a low-privileged user can catch and break out of to execute as SYSTEM. The attack requires an installed or obtainable vulnerable MSI on Windows and local low-privilege access; the documented consequence is full local privilege escalation.
