Script execution via innerHTML-based text extraction
Published Jul 21, 2023 · Updated Oct 21, 2024
Cross-site scripting in w8tcha CKEditor WordCount Plugin before 1.17.12 allows remote attackers to execute script through source mode. The wordcount/plugin.js text-extraction path assigns filtered editor HTML to a detached div's innerHTML, causing embedded markup to execute during word counting. Exploitation requires a user to switch the editor to source mode; TYPO3 normally also requires an authenticated backend account, but frontend integrations that reflect submitted rich text can expose the flaw without authentication.
