Cross-site scripting via unescaped badge titles
Published Jun 30, 2023 · Updated Nov 26, 2024
Cross-site scripting in Wikibase for MediaWiki 1.39.3 and earlier allows remote attackers to run script via a crafted badge title. SiteLinksView.php inserts formatted badge labels into title attributes without encoding quotes, while wbTemplate leaves quotes unescaped in client-side templates. A victim must view an item using the attacker-controlled badge; injected event handlers then execute in the victim's browser and can access or modify page content.
