Subscriber-to-Administrator escalation via unchecked option writes
Published Jul 18, 2023 · Updated Apr 8, 2026
Missing authorization in ProfileGrid 5.5.1 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to overwrite WordPress site options. The profile_magic_check_smtp_connection handler accepts attacker-controlled SMTP-setting data and writes it into site options without verifying the caller's capability. Subscriber-level access is sufficient, and arbitrary option changes can elevate the account to administrative privileges.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
