Service crash via asserted error-response failure
Published Jan 22, 2025 · Updated Jan 28, 2025
Reachable assertion in Open5GS MME 2.6.4 and earlier allows remote attackers to repeatedly crash the service via malformed S1AP input. In s1ap_handle_handover_cancel, the missing MME_UE_S1AP_ID path calls s1ap_send_error_indication with incomplete identifiers and asserts when that call returns an error. Access to the S1AP interface through a base station or a compromised or misconfigured base-station link is required, and repeated packets can sustain cellular-service interruption.
