CVE-2023-3696Public exploitNetwork attack vector

Data exposure and crashes via unfiltered initialization keys

Published Jul 17, 2023 · Updated Oct 30, 2024

Prototype pollution in Automattic Mongoose before 7.3.4 allows remote attackers to expose application data or crash services. The document initialization routine iterates database-returned keys and accepts proto and constructor, allowing a renamed field to write through Object.prototype. Exploitation requires attacker-controlled document keys to reach initialization; the demonstrated path renames a stored field and triggers a subsequent query.
