CVE-2023-36823Network attack vector

Cross-site scripting via style CSS escaping bypass

Published Jul 6, 2023 · Updated Feb 13, 2025

Cross-site scripting in Ryan Grove Sanitize 3.0.0 through 6.0.1 allows remote attackers to inject HTML and CSS via crafted sanitized input. The sanitizer fails to escape a closing-tag sequence in style element content when relaxed or custom configurations permit style elements and CSS at-rules, allowing browser-rendered output to carry attacker-controlled markup. Exploitation requires an application to use those configurations and render the sanitized result in a browser; impact is cross-site scripting or other unintended browser behavior.
