CVE-2023-36499Public exploitNetwork attack vector

Authenticated command execution via oversized SSID values

Published Aug 7, 2023 · Updated Oct 15, 2024

Buffer overflows in NETGEAR XR300 Firmware 1.0.3.78 allow remote authenticated users to execute commands via oversized SSID values. The genie_ap_wifi_change.cgi path writes wla_ssid and wlg_ssid HTTP values directly to NVRAM without validating their lengths, and nd_wireless.cgi later consumes the oversized values. Network access to the router web interface and router-admin credentials are required; exploitation can execute arbitrary commands or leave the device permanently inoperable.
