CVE-2023-36308Public exploit

Process crash via unchecked TIFF palette index

Published Sep 5, 2023 · Updated Nov 4, 2025

Improper array-index validation in disintegration Imaging 1.6.2 allows attackers to crash a calling process via a crafted TIFF file. The scanner.scan function indexes its palette with a pixel value from a decoded paletted image without verifying that the value is below the palette length. Exploitation requires an application to decode an attacker-supplied TIFF and pass the image to Grayscale; the documented result is a process panic, while broader security consequences remain disputed.
