Environment variable disclosure via unescaped CMD percent signs
Published Jun 23, 2023 · Updated Dec 5, 2024
Information disclosure in Eric Cornelissen Shescape before 1.7.1 allows remote authenticated users to read environment variables. The CMD escaping routines fail to prefix percent signs in input processed by quote, quoteAll, escape, or interpolation-enabled escapeAll, so CMD expands tokens such as %PATH%. Exploitation requires a consuming application on Windows to invoke CMD with an affected API and attacker-controlled input; the demonstrated consequence is read-only variable disclosure.
