CVE-2023-35828

Kernel memory corruption via USB role-work race

Published Jun 18, 2023 · Updated Oct 21, 2024

Use-after-free in the Linux kernel before 6.3.2 allows local users to corrupt kernel memory by triggering Renesas USB3 removal. renesas_usb3_remove frees usb3->role_sw without first synchronizing pending role_work, which can then pass the dangling pointer to usb_role_switch_set_role. Reachability requires driver or device removal while the work item is running; ordinary driver removal requires root privileges, and the bug was found by static analysis.
