CVE-2023-35812Network attack vector

Unintended file write via unchecked relative paths

Published Apr 3, 2024 · Updated Mar 25, 2025

Improper filename validation in OpenSSH 7.4 for Amazon Linux 1 and 2 allows remote attackers to write unintended files through scp. The scp client checks received filenames against the requested name only when the request uses an absolute path, leaving relative-path transfers unchecked. Exploitation requires a user to retrieve a relative path from an attacker-controlled SSH server, which can place an unexpected file in the transfer destination.
