Security bypass via inconsistent device-path classification

Published Aug 8, 2023 · Updated Aug 10, 2026

A security-feature bypass in Windows HTML Platforms allows remote attackers to evade remote-path protections with a crafted path. MapUrlToZone and CreateFile classify the same local-device path differently, allowing a path treated as local to resolve to an attacker-controlled remote resource. Exploitation requires the crafted path to be processed; Outlook delivery can trigger an outbound SMB authentication attempt without a click.
