Local privilege escalation via WIA trace-file link following
Published Jul 11, 2023 · Updated Jan 1, 2025
Link following in Microsoft Windows Image Acquisition allows local users to elevate privileges by redirecting its Wiatrace.log trace file. InitTraceFile opened the fixed log name without rejecting a link path; the patch added TrcLib::IsPathALink and file-handle metadata validation before CreateFileW. A low-privilege local user must construct the link chain before WIA accesses the log, after which its privileged file operation can modify protected file state.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.
