CVE-2023-34853Public exploit

UEFI code execution via oversized firmware variable

Published Aug 22, 2023 · Updated Oct 3, 2024

A stack buffer overflow in Supermicro X12DPG-QR BIOS 1.4b allows local users to execute arbitrary code in UEFI runtime. In the SmcSecureErase module, a second GetVariable call trusts the attacker-controlled DataSize and copies an oversized SmcSecurityEraseSetupVar value into a 1,680-byte stack buffer. Kernel-level access is required to set the variable, and successful exploitation transfers control to a DXE runtime application.
