Application crash via unbounded recursive JSON parsing
Published Jun 14, 2023 · Updated Jan 3, 2025
Stack exhaustion in Genson 1.6 and earlier allows remote attackers to crash applications that deserialize crafted JSON input. CollectionConverter and UntypedConverter recursively descend deeply nested arrays without enforcing a depth limit, eventually raising a JVM StackOverflowError. The affected application must pass attacker-controlled JSON to Genson, and the demonstrated consequence is a parser crash.
